On Monday 19 February a number of staff and students were denied entry to the Hatfield UP campus by striking staff members.

“We regret to inform you that certain striking staff members have illegally obstructed vehicles from entering the Hatfield campus premises”, said UP COO, Sandile Mthiyane in a statement.

The protests follows the announcement of strike action by Joint Labour (NEHAWU, UPWO, and Solidarity) on 15 February. Some students were denied entry to campus and residence grounds by the striking workers who are in dispute with the university following failed salary negotiations for 2024.

According to an email from university management, picketing was set to take place at the University Road entrance from 15 March. The strike has subsequently moved around campus with protesters blocking the Prospect street entrance as well as turnstiles leading to some of the female residences.

According to the UP statement active engagement with police and the leadership of the unions were ongoing. “Our priority remains the safety and well-being of all individuals associated with our institution”, read the statement.

Students who are unable to access their classes are asked to email the dean’s office of their respective faculties (email addresses can be found on the various faculty websites) in order to inform them of their absence and to discuss any necessary alternative arrangements.

UP indicated that they would provide further updates as the situation develops.

This is a developing story.
