AMUKELANI MAKAMU AND JAMEO CALVERT There are roughly 5382 students living in university residences across South Africa during the current lockdown. This is according to a report from the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande. Of these, 236 are in UP residences. Students could apply to stay in residences once evacuations started, but only those with compelling reasons were allowed to stay. The majority are international students. KENDALL BEHR The University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) are all preparing for contact classes to go online for their second semester, even if the lockdown restrictions are lifted by 16 April.   CAREL WILLEMSE UP announces suspension of all contact classes and rescheduling of academic calendar. All contact classes, graduation ceremonies, conferences, mass gatherings, and all events, including sporting events at the University of Pretoria have been suspended with immediate effect. The Citizen’s factsheet on crime last year stated that around 50 000 sexual offences were recorded nationally.
