SAM MUKWAMU The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of our lives, and sport has been no exception, particularly in a time when people are desperate for the escape and stress relief that sport can provide. In order to limit the spread of the virus, countries across the globe enforced restrictions on public gatherings and suspended non-essential activities, including sport. These restrictions have not only inflicted a significant financial hit to the sports industry, but have changed the way we participate in and view sport for what could be a long time. According to The World Economic Forum, the global value of the sports industryRead More →

EMILY HARRISON Earlier this year, PDBY reported on the huge losses that the entertainment industry was making during the lockdown. It was reported that the industry would lose about 3 billion rands in the duration of lockdown, and 10 000 jobs were at risk. Now, under level two lockdown, the industry is slowly starting to open up again. When President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa would move to a lower lockdown level, another set of restrictions were lifted. Restaurants can now sell alcohol and host live performances as long as the amount of people is restricted to 50, and all patrons are wearing masks andRead More →

Spoegwolf – Wind

KENDRA CONNOCK Five months in a nationwide lockdown have proven particularly beneficial to Stellenbosch-based band, Spoegwolf, who, on 1 September, released their second album of the year. Wind is a combination of all of the best aspects of these Afrikaans alternative rockers: incredible instrumentals, carefully crafted lyrics, and a sound which is so uniquely Spoegwolf. Wind is familiar enough. Any listener will be able to identify the artists from this new offering; but it is also distinct, unpredictable, and a clear demonstration of just how talented these musicians are. On each album there is something new – a progression as the artists explore new soundsRead More →

KENDRA CONNOCK Deadline is one of the few old-school heavy metal bands in South Africa. They occupy a very unique niche in the South African music industry. Their music is a combination of various genres and ultimately aims at reviving the spirit of 1980s metal and heavy rock music. The 6-piece band is based in Pretoria and comprised of real-life lawyers and auditors who spend their nights resurrecting metal music, frontman Jessy Switchblade refers to the band as “an 80s band without the moerse attitude”. The band has received critical acclaim from fans worldwide, their shelves are lined with South African Metal Music Awards andRead More →

KENDRA CONNOCK Second-year Speech and Language Therapy student, Isabelle Siaki, is a polymath. When she’s not busy with her studies, something which she genuinely enjoys due to the diverse range of people she interacts with on a daily basis, Isabelle occupies her time with all things creative. PDBY conducted an online interview with Isabelle to speak about her YouTube channel and her music. Isabelle says her YouTube channel (isabellesiaki) was born out of curiosity (and a little bit of boredom) during a period in her life when “YouTubers were like gods”. She looks to social media platforms for ideas from fellow creators and takes directionRead More →

Thoroughly focused on and passionate about both his studies and music, he has a background in club dance music, which takes form in his current music to give it a unique melodic feel. What does the name 17ad mean and represent to you? All the tracks that you hear are mixed, mastered, engineered, and produced by me, 17ad. I live by the slogan of “forever young, forever remembered” so I came up with the name. It is two parts, so the 17 is a youthful number, foreverRead More →

KENDRA CONNOCK BCOM is a band of young musicians from UP who are trying to make a difference in the South African music industry. Inspired by the writing style of Hunter Kennedy (Die Heuwels Fantasties) and the unique jazz-rock sound of Stellenbosch-based band Uncle Spike, BCOM is producing a new sound for the South African listener; something that hasn’t been seen on our music scene before. When asked to describe their musical style in three words, the boys from BCOM opt for a simple explanation of “very very niiccee”. There are no airs and graces here, only passion for crafting music that can be enjoyedRead More →
