The University of Pretoria’s FNB UP-Tuks rugby side have sent a clear message to the rest of the Varsity Cup field: the Stripe Generation mean business this season.

Back-to-back commanding victories over traditional rivals FNB Maties and FNB CUT have propelled UP-Tuks to the top of the log, maintaining their unbeaten start to the competition and building early momentum. With four consecutive wins and a perfect home record intact, the Pretoria team are quickly emerging as one of the strongest title contenders in this year’s Varsity Cup campaign.

A Statement Victory Against Maties

UP-Tuks’ clash with Maties at Tuks Stadium was expected to be one of the defining encounters of the early rounds, and the match delivered in both intensity and drama. Despite playing in front of a passionate home crowd, the home side initially found themselves under pressure. The hosts struck first in the 21st minute when hooker Jean Fourie powered over from a driving maul after sustained pressure. However, Maties responded quickly with back-to-back tries from CJ Erasmus and Ryan Manuel, capitalising on a maul and a clinical intercept to take control of the game.

With flyhalf Christiaan van Heerden Smith converting his kicks and adding a penalty, Maties carried a 17–5 advantage into half-time, leaving the home side with work to do in the second half.

What followed was a powerful display of resilience and control from UP as the home side returned from the break with renewed intensity. Munashe Dukuswa broke through the Maties defensive line to reduce the deficit before lock Ben Jansen van Vuuren crossed the line following dominant scrum pressure to level the scores.

Once UP found their rhythm, they did not look back. Fourie secured his second try of the night from another driving maul before Jayd Austin capped off the performance with a decisive try to seal a 33–17 comeback victory.

Austin’s influential performance earned him the Man of the Match award. “It’s really just an honour,” Austin said after the match. “I don’t really know how to explain it. I’m just grateful for my team – I really couldn’t have done it without them. I just played for my brothers out there.”

The victory carried particular significance for the squad, reinforcing the team’s commitment to protecting their home ground. “It gives us a lot of confidence,” Austin added. “We made a promise to each other that we’re not going to lose on our home ground – we protect our home.”

Ruthless Dominance Against CUT

If the win over Maties demonstrated UP’s resilience, their next outing against the Central University of Technology (CUT) showcased their attacking firepower.

In front of another energetic crowd at Tuks Stadium, the hosts dismantled the Ixias in emphatic fashion, running in a remarkable 78–17 victory.

The scoring began in the 15th minute when flanker Abel Pretorius crashed over from a rolling maul. Moments later, centre Kobus Janse van Rensburg broke through the defence to score a Point of Origin try, instantly stretching the lead.

From there, the team’s momentum became unstoppable. Winger Andile Myeni added a brace before Pretorius secured his second try to claim the bonus point early in the match. UP-Tuks continued to dominate both physically and tactically, with tries from Jean Fourie, Akhona Kunene, and Ben Jansen van Vuuren helping the home side storm into half-time with a staggering 56–0 lead.

FNB CUT attempted to respond after the break with two quick tries, but Tuks quickly reasserted control. Pretorius completed his hat-trick before further tries from Gustav van der Merwe, Myeni, and captain Dillon Smith completed the comprehensive victory.

Van Vuuren, who delivered a standout performance, was named Man of the Match. “It means so much. I can’t even put it into words,” he said afterwards. “The guys who came before me are my role models, so I’m just following in their footsteps and it means everything to me.”

Momentum Building for the Stripe Generation

The victories over Maties and CUT highlight two key strengths of this Tuks side: resilience under pressure and relentless attacking capability.

Against Maties, the team showed the composure required to overturn a half-time deficit against one of the tournament’s most formidable opponents. Against CUT, they demonstrated the clinical finishing and structured dominance needed to overwhelm opposition.

For captain Dillon Smith, the unbeaten start reflects the team’s focus on consistency and discipline. “It’s really big for us,” Smith said. “Like I said before, we don’t want to lose any home games, so we’re still on track with that one. But it means a lot to us. We’ve built great momentum in the tournament now.”

A Season Taking Shape

While the Varsity Cup season is still in its early stages, UP-Tuks’ performances have already established a strong foundation for the remainder of the campaign.

Defeating Maties – one of the teams’s most historic rivals – provided a psychological boost that could prove crucial later in the tournament. Following that with a dominant performance against CUT further emphasised the team’s depth and attacking capability.

For the supporters packed into Tuks Stadium, the atmosphere across both matches reflected a growing belief that something special could be unfolding this season.

If the Stripe Generation continue to combine their physical dominance, disciplined defence, and explosive attack, they may well remain the team to beat as the Varsity Cup progresses.
