Ghana battled to recover from Dempsey’s swift goal. Once they regained their focus, they maintained 56% possession of the ball.

In the 21st minute of the game, USA forward Jozy Altidore tore his hamstring causing him to retire from the game. The injury might even prevent him from continuing in the World Cup.
Ghana’s Mohammed Rabiu received the team’s first yellow card for a strong challenge on a USA player.

Ghana did not give up hope on trying to snatch an equaliser. They came close with captain Asamoah Gyan’s header that missed by only a few inches.
Ghana seemed determined to even the score in the second half, but their shots on goal missed narrowly.

Controlling 60% possession, Ghana applied pressure on the USA defence. This constant pressure paid off when winger André Ayew evened the score in the 82nd minute of the game. However, USA substitute John Brooks gave the USA the lead a few minutes later, heading in the winning goal.
