Prof. Koornhof said that the decision to withdraw was made by the university’s Student Culture Committee (STUKU) and that the decision was supported by UP management. STUKU is responsible for organizing UP’s own internal serenade competition and for organising UP’s participation in the national serenade competition.
Prof. Koornhof said that various parties were consulted before the final decision to withdraw was made in May this year. These parties included the Temporary Student Committee (TSC), STUKU, House Committees from residences and day houses, as well as the university’s management.
Rikus Delport, UP spokesperson, said that the decision to withdraw from the ATKV Serenade Competition was not influenced by the events surrounding the cancellation of Serrie in May. Serrie Finals were cancelled after sexist and derogatory posters shown at the Serrie prelims caused outrage from students on social media.
