The University of Pretoria’s (UP) Faculty of Law has announced the appointment of Professor Charles Maimela as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning for the period 1 August 2020 to 30 April 2024. His appointment makes him the youngest and the first black Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Prof. Maimela’s main research interests lie in Medical Law, having written his doctoral dissertation on “Legal issues relating to the treatment of persons living with cancer”. His focus is also on Customary Law, having written a number of articles, book chapters, and a monograph on Religion and Law in South Africa. Prof. Maimela holds the LLB, LLM and LLD degrees from the University of South Africa and joined the university’s Department of Private Law in 2016, after holding prior teaching positions at UNISA and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, serving on the Teaching and Learning Committees at the universities – also serving on the Transformation and the Faculty Research Committees at UP. In addition to being the coordinator of BA Law, Prof. Maimela is the Editor-in-Chief of the legal publication, De Jure. He takes over from Professor Monray Botha, who has held the position of acting Deputy Dean since late 2019.
