Tuks Varsity Cup and Blue Bulls fullback Jesse Kriel has been selected to the South Africa u/20 squad to replace injured wing Sergeal Peterson. Kriel joined the squad on 28 May.

Kriel said that he was “pretty blown away” by his call up to the squad. “I’m now focusing on what I can contribute towards the team and just enjoying myself in France,” he said.

Kriel represented Tuks in all of the university’s Varsity Cup warm-up games and made the final squad for the Varsity Cup 2013 campaign. A left-wrist injury prevented him from playing in any of the tournament’s matches.

Kriel is enrolled at the university and is currently studying sports science.

Kriel joins Tuks teammates Jacques du Plessis, Handre Pollard, Dries Swanepoel and Ruan Steenkamp in the Baby Bok squad. Steenkamp will captain the team.

The South African u/20 squad left for France on 30 May to prepare to defend their title at the International Rugby Board (IRB) Junior Championship, which takes place from 5 June to 23 June.
