Train Like a Champion, Graduate Like a Leader

For many young athletes, the pressure is real. You are expected to perform on the field, keep up in the classroom, and somehow figure out how to build a future for both. That balance is not easy, and for many, it often feels as though one must give way to the other.

That is where the TuksSport Sport Performance Support Bursary at the University of Pretoria comes in. The bursary is aimed at student-athletes who show promise in their sport,  whether at a school, provincial, or national level, and want to keep pursuing it without placing their education on hold. It is about giving young, talented people the chance to grow in both areas and not forcing them to pick one over the other.

What makes the programme stand out is the environment around it. Student-athletes are placed in a community where training, studying, and recovery matter. You are not just left to figure it out on your own. Instead, there is structured coaching, sport science support, and academic backing that is designed to help you cope with the demands of both worlds.

However, this bursary is not only about performance statistics or highlight reels. It is also about attitude. The kind of student who is willing to work, stay consistent, and keep going even when things are difficult – someone who understands that talent matters, but discipline is what keeps you in the game.

A few of the programme’s several performance-enhancing features include access to excellent sporting facilities, professional coaching, and athlete development services. Athletes will receive mentoring and guidance during their time at the university from knowledgeable, passionate TuksSport coaches who will ensure that they have the tools necessary to excel in their chosen sport.

The following sports are open for applications: archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoeing, chess, cricket, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate, netball, rowing, rugby, squash, swimming, tennis, trampoline, triathlon, volleyball, and wrestling.

Before applying, students must meet the minimum admission requirements. For the 2027 academic year, you must be academically enrolled full-time at UP, and you need to be exceptionally good in one of the previously mentioned sports. Furthermore, the closing date is 31 July 2026. Students must reapply for aid each year and take note that bursaries will only be given out for one academic year at a time.

The message is simple: you do not have to choose between your studies and sport. If you have the talent and the drive, this is the place to be.
