Celebrating Women’s Month, One Stride at a Time

by Betty Molefe | Aug 5, 2026 | Sports

Women’s Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, strength, and courage of women. It is also a time to recognise the importance of creating spaces where women feel supported and empowered. This August, students and staff have the chance to be part of this celebration by putting on their running shoes and joining thousands of women at the Totalsports Women’s Race – one of South Africa’s biggest Women’s Day events.

Students who choose to participate know that it is between a 5km and a 10km route, making the event suitable for women of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you are an experienced runner aiming for a personal best or someone who simply wants to enjoy a morning walk with friends, remember that there is a place for everyone.

Since the race began in 2001, the Totalsports Women’s Race has become more than just a running event. It has grown into a celebration of women, bringing thousands of people from different backgrounds together to celebrate Women’s Month. Every year, the streets are filled with pink as women create a “Sea of Pink” that represents unity, support, and positivity.

Moreover, university life can be stressful. With lectures, assignments, tests, and busy schedules, students do not always get enough time to focus on themselves. Taking part in events like the Totalsports Women’s Race gives students a chance to take a break, stay active, and spend time with friends while improving their physical and mental wellbeing.

The best part about the race is that everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a professional runner to take part. You can run, jog, or walk at your own pace. The event is not only about reaching the finish line, but also about enjoying the experience, meeting new people, and celebrating women supporting one another.

The race encourages everyone to celebrate each milestone and achievement. The support from runners and spectators will create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels motivated. It shows that success is not only about finishing first, but also about the confidence, friendships, and memories created along the way.

For students, the race is a chance to represent the university, connect with others, and celebrate Women’s Month together. Whether you join with friends, a sports club, or on your own, the event is a chance to be part of something meaningful.
