In terms of negatives, the series does suffer from pacing issues with regards to character development and plot direction. This is mainly due to the fact that it is based on a manga that involves several different story arcs, which the creators tried to adapt into one cohesive experience. This makes Tokyo Ghoul seem rushed at times. However, the overall development is beautifully animated and the opening intro, as well as the action scenes, are gripping and really captivate the viewer. The introduction song “Unravel”, by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, will have you listening to the opening again and again.
While Tokyo Ghoul may have some issues when compared to its manga counterpart, as a stand-alone anime series it really delivers a fresh take on the horror genre. Instead of being the usual gore fest, it is a series that makes you ponder what is right when there is no other option, or as protagonist Kankeki puts it, “I’m not the one who’s wrong. What’s wrong… is the world!”
