On Thursday, 22 August, UP students saw musician and entrepreneur JR Bogoba and LinkedIn representative, Caroline Wyly, speak to students about successful futures and career goals in the piazza, at an event hosted by Nescafe.
JR began his motivational talk by speaking about his failures. JR spoke about his opening of a ChesaNyama in Diepsloot where, after less than a year, the business had already dipped. Following this, he decided to invest in a production company and produce television. Here, he produced Rap Dads on Vuzu Amp. However, also after a year, the production tanked. JR then went on to talk about his music, and how this kept him going. Even though he had more failures than successes he kept going due to his passion for music and his skill in entrepreneurship. JR is now the director of Feel Good Music, an Entertainment Solutions Company that “specializes in tailor-made music services.” In 2012 he founded the company and changed it into what it is now. JR first began opening the feel-good sessions up to the public via YouTube as a way to reach everyone in a cheaper and more accessible manner. JR now runs a multichannel network in partnership with YouTube. Due to his passion for music and business and his determination to succeed, JR now runs a very popular business where his passion for music runs through it.
Caroline Wyly also got a chance to speak to students about LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a business to business platform that “enables students to connect with Individuals, Companies, Businesses and Recruiters who are looking to hire graduates.” LinkedIn can help businesses and companies find graduates and different skills to recruit and hire. This platform can also help students gain an insight into what is currently happening in the business world. A good profile is also necessary to have as it “ensures that the student “stands-out” in the crowd and gets noticed when it comes to looking for a career. If a student’s profile is complete, looks professional and the settings are optimised, it will come up higher in the search results when Companies are searching for graduates via search engines.” This is a good platform to have when considering the future and building connections. LinkedIn makes a student or graduate more accessible to other companies and business, thus opening more opportunities for oneself. It is an important platform to have when considering the business world and entrepreneurship.
