The day allowed students to network with and to get to know more about the companies that attended the golf day, as well as to participate in games and competitions alongside representatives from the firms. The golf day was a fun approach and was well received by all who attended the event.
On the course, serious golf players and some rookies socialised and competed in four balls made up of students and firm representatives.
“It was a great day overall. All of the students and firms bonded well with each other in a friendly, yet competitive atmosphere,” said Tax@Tuks chairperson Louis van Wyk.
The prizes of the event were sponsored by companies such as Aroma, Sorbet and the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners (SAIT), and included tickets to the Tax Indaba to the value of R10 000.
The companies put in a valiant effort with KPMG, BDO and Allan Gray narrowly losing to BluESP, who finished on 46 points on the par 72 course. Winners of the student division were George Georgoulakis and Jarryd Vliegenthart who scored an impressive 51 points to seal their overall victory. Rossouw van Schalkwyk won the prize for the longest day for an individual player (the worst player on the day) scoring a mere ten points.
Tax@Tuks event organiser Dewald Claassen said, “The event provided us with the opportunity to stand out amongst our peers by interacting directly with the recruitment personnel, directors and CEOs of each respective firm.” Claassen also emphasised the importance of using the day as a “paperless CV” because “in the end you employ people, not paper”.
