It was a night of exhilarating rugby performance. Defending champions OP Village played against the runners-up, Sonop, in what would be a rematch of last year’s final. Sonop started powerfully with their controlled possession of the ball and territory for most of the first half. However, they only had five points to show for their dominance, with OP defending well on their lines. The match remained finely balanced, but two successive penalty kicks gave Sonop a breathable lead. OP did themselves no favours as they made crucial handling errors in opposition territory. Ultimately, Sonop was victorious, with a final score of 18-3. Sonop redeemed themselves after last year’s loss, but OP will surely bounce back. When these two rivals meet again, it will be a feast for the eyes.

In the other senior match, we saw Morula Legae take on House Mopane. Early in the second half, a front-rower of Morula intercepted the ball and sprinted 40 metres to score under the posts. This ignited the crowd to a whole new level. This match only opened up in the final 15 minutes when Morula scored two consecutive tries to ultimately win the battle with a final score of 27-14.

This was yet again a great evening of rugby with the spectators rocking up in massive numbers. Those who felt that Varsity Cup is lacking are welcome to find themselves a place next to the field.
