Mann’s visit was to supplement the English 220 curriculum which deals with a large volume of Mann’s poetry. The English 220 module centres on twentieth century, postmodern and postcolonial literature of which South African poetry is an area of focus.

Born in Port Elizabeth, Mann studied at Wits, Oxford and the University of London. He is currently a poetry professor at Rhodes University. Since 1982, Mann has published eight volumes of poetry as well as a play.
