Jay Sean kept the sound of the album similar to his previous one, All or Nothing, but managed to combine it with a few current influences, giving the album a newer feel. With the usual lyrical theme of love – losing it, finding it, wanting it and having it – the album mostly depends on vocal and musical components to make it something worth listening to.
The vocals throughout the album take you on an auditory rollercoaster, and although it has a few brief derailments, it is worth the ride nonetheless.
Jay Sean definitely puts his range and tone to better use than he did before. It is so good that it distracts the listener from noticing the similarity in the rhythms of the songs throughout Neon. Collaborations with the likes of Ace Hood, Busta Rhymes and Rick Ross also make for a more diverse sound. The album could have benefited from a few more collaborations, but Jay Sean proves that he can get through the majority of an album without any help.
Neon is not what many electro-pop R&B enthusiasts had hoped it would be, but it sufficiently captures Jay Sean’s voice, influence and style in a 15-track album that still delivers the music that won fans over in the first place.
