The ultimate shindig show is coming to South Africa in a far out and happening groove. The international hit show, Grease, has come to our shores and features an all-South African cast. Performances recently began at the Teatro at Montecasino.
It is the original romantic comedy featuring all the memorable songs from the movie including “You’re the one that I want”, “Summer nights” and “Greased lightning’’.
Since hitting the Broadway scene in 1972, Grease’s position has been strongly established in the cultural hall of fame, having captured the imagination and hearts of millions with its wicked tunes and outrageous dos.
In 1979 Grease took over the record as the longest running show in the history of Broadway and the hit motion picture was released in 1978. Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, it went on to become the highest grossing movie musical ever.
In 2003 it was voted the “No 1 Greatest Musical” in a countdown of the “100 Greatest Musicals” on an overseas television channel. In this achievement, Grease has proved that a musical love story exploding with leather, cheerleaders, slick hairdos, rock ’n roll, teenage anxiety and youthful romance is timeless and universal.
