Despite many attacks on the German goal, Portugal fell even further behind when German player Mats Hummels scored a header off a corner kick.

In the 37th minute, an altercation between Müller and Pepe resulted in a red card for the Portuguese player. Müller went down easily after a challenge by Pepe. It was not the challenge but Pepe’s retaliation to Müller’s reaction that earned him the red card.

Müller scored his second goal just before half time.
The second half started off slowly, until Ronaldo had another opportunity to show off his talents. However, the Portuguese could not convert the scoring opportunities.

Portugal were forced into making their last change for the game after André Almeida pulled his hamstring. Hummels soon followed after he injured his knee.

With 13 minutes of the game left, Müller completed his hat trick to hand Germany a 4-0 victory.
Germany will play Ghana on 21 June, while Portugal face the USA on 22 June.
