Germany started the game with attacking play and going forward they put pressure on the French defence. France did not manage to hold onto the ball and build up play and came closest to opening the scoring through Karim Benzema, but his shot went inches wide.

Minutes later Paul Pogba conceded a free kick near the penalty box. Toni Kroos stepped up to take the free kick and swung the ball into the penalty box area where defender Hummels was able to head it in to put Germany 1-0 up.
Germany seemed to be motivated by the goal as they intensified their attacking. Although Germany applied pressure on the French defence, it did not wilt under pressure.
Miroslav Klose was brought down in the box, but appeals from the German players for a penalty kick were not enough to convince the referee.

France settled into the game as the game progressed and came close to equalising through Mathieu Valbuena but Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer punched it out for a corner kick. The resulting corner kick did not materialise into an equaliser as the game headed into half time with Germany in the lead.
The second half resumed with France displaying more intent in attacking and looking for an equaliser. This was evidenced by a Raphaël Varane header at the far right post but Neuer was alert again to punch it out as the game approached the hour mark.

Germany came close to increasing their goal tally to two goals but Thomas Müller’s shot was inches wide. On the other side of the pitch, Blaise Matuidi came the closest to equalising but Neuer was solid in goal.
A counterattacking move orchestrated by the Germany attacking forwards almost resulted in another goal but André Schürrle, who was left one on one with Hugo Lloris, could not put it past the French keeper who was quick to block it with his feet, arguably producing the save of the match.

The game progressed towards additional time and France almost produced a last-minute equaliser through Benzema, but Neuer was untroubled by the goal-bound shot as the Germans eliminated the French side.
