The winter months are quickly approaching and for most they are accompanied by warm coats, cups of hot chocolate and adding a few more kilos to the bathroom scale. If you’re not too excited by the latter, Tuks Student Gym can help you avoid the inevitable winter weight gain.

The gym itself is divided into four sections, which include cardio machinery, resistance machinery, free weights and a stretching area.   One of the most interesting developments is that a number of group classes are on offer to all members. One can take part in aerobics, pilates, yoga, water aerobics, spinning (only at Groenkloof campus) or hip-hop classes.

According to hip hop instructor Marlie van Oudtshoorn, the classes are a fun way of getting into shape and can take some of the monotony out of a regular gym work out. It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and to try something new in a relaxed environment.

Classes are free to all members and take place on a daily basis so finding the time to attend one is easy.  Equipment for the various classes is provided by the gym for the members. It is suggested that those participating in yoga and pilates bring their own mat.

Anyone interested in attending any of the abovementioned classes should remember to swipe into the gym before the class starts and fill in a class list. Group classes only take place during the UP terms when lectures are taking place. No group classes will be presented during exams or recess.
