FLY@UP’s Thrift Activation Returns with New Location and Bigger Plans

FLY@UP hosted its second Thrift Activation of the year on 9 October, and it was a resounding success. The new venue made a significant difference. The space at the Rautenbach Hall allowed the setup to be more organized, compared to the previous piazza location, allowing for a better flow of people and giving the event the feel of a proper thrift shop. Students were not just grabbing clothes but enjoying a well-organized, curated shopping experience, complete with upbeat music that set a fun, lively tone.

The setup ensured a smooth experience for everyone. Students were taken into the hall in groups of 30, where they spent time learning about the university’s support services before entering the thrift area. Once inside, they had 10 minutes to browse through the racks and pick out up to eight items, creating a sense of urgency and excitement. Many noted how thrilling it was to hunt for great finds while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Beyond the free clothing, many students left the event with a deeper awareness of the university’s various support structures. With exams on the horizon, FLY@UP used the activation as an opportunity to share valuable resources aimed at reducing stress and helping students succeed academically. Some attendees mentioned they had not realized just how many support services were available, and the event served as a perfect introduction to these resources.

While FLY@UP’s primary mission remains academic support, the sustainability aspect of the Thrift Activation also stood out. By encouraging students to reuse pre-loved clothing, the event helped reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion. Although sustainability was not the initial focus when the event was first conceived, it has naturally evolved into an important feature.

FLY@UP’s work does not stop here. They will also host “Ready for Exams” activations on 16 October for Prinshof Campus, 21 October for Onderstepoort, 22 October for Groenkloof, 23 October for Mamelodi, and 24 October for Hatfield Campus. These activations will further support students by providing essential resources and guidance as they prepare for the upcoming exam period.

Overall, the second Thrift Activation of the year proved to be more than just a clothing giveaway. It fostered a sense of community, promoted environmental responsibility, and, most importantly, provided students with valuable support and resources during a crucial time in the semester. FLY@UP continues to show its dedication to helping students in innovative and practical ways, making this event one of the semester’s highlights.
