On 10 August, between the times of 22:00 – 22:10, a fire broke out at Campus Key Student Living on Glynn Street. Present on the scene were UP student residents who were moved to South Campus Key. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
According to Matthew, a resident at Campus Key, management was able to vacate all students from Campus Key Glynn on time before the fire was severe. Firefighters battled with the fire for over an hour.
According to residents, the fire destroyed the top A block, equipment, furniture and other valuables. “The roof caved in and students were moved to South Campus Key to spend the night, and those who can arrange their own accommodation were encouraged to do so”, a resident told PDBY.
PDBY attempted to get comment from Sergeant Mahlangu, the police officer on scene, as well as the firefighter incident commander, but they both referred PDBY to their various department spokespersons. Brooklyn SAPS and the Tshwane Fire Department have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The UP SRC has opened up donations to those that wish to support students affected by the fire. Donations can be dropped off at the DSA building on UP’s Hatfield campus.
This is a developing story.
