UP professor invited to perform at Westminster Abbey
Head of UP Arts, Prof. Theo van Wyk, has been invited to perform a solo organ recital at London’s Westminster Abbey next month.
During his performance, Prof. van Wyk will perform pieces such as Toccata for Madiba (written by Surendran Reddy) and Three Organ Pieces (written by UP Professor. Henk Temmingh).
According to an article on UP’s website, Prof. Van Wyk said that he is “thrilled at the prospect of performing in such an internationally recognised and sought-after venue”.
The iconic organ at Westminster Abbey was installed in 1937 and incorporated some of the pipework from the previous organ that was built by William Hill in 1848.
Every Sunday, Westminster Abbey hosts concerts that feature recitals from its own organists as well as international performers.
UP student qualifies for Miss SA pageant
Karishma Ramdev, a medical student at UP, has been appointed as KwaZulu-Natal’s regional qualifier for the Miss South Africa pageant.
Ramdev told the Rising Sun, “Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had two dreams. One was to become a doctor and the other was to become Miss South Africa. I am now pursuing both those dreams at the same time and it is the most exhilarating feeling knowing that both may become a reality. I too, want to make a difference. I also know how important it was for me as a child to have Indian people whom I could look up to, knowing that they came from the same cultural background. I want to represent the Indian community as I feel that we aren’t represented enough. I want young aspiring girls to know that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.”
The pageant will be held in May this year, in Pretoria.
