Months after the University of Pretoria’s Formula Student Project was introduced, the student-led initiative has made significant progress towards its goal of designing and manufacturing a Formula-style race car. While the finished vehicle remains the ultimate objective, the project is increasingly proving to be a platform for practical learning, collaboration, and innovation.
Led by a group of engineering students, the project has expanded its team since PDBY last reported its progress. Reynhardt Kruger has joined the Aerodynamics Team, while the Next Generation Programme has welcomed 15 new members, bringing the total number of students in the programme to 25. According to the team, their progress has exceeded expectations, particularly during the design phase. Students have also completed workshop training in welding, machining, and sheet metal work, gaining practical experience that complements their academic studies.
“Theory can only get you so far,” said Muhammad Faydhan Kala, highlighting the importance of applying classroom knowledge to real engineering challenges. The project has now completed the design of several key components of the vehicle, including the rolling chassis, front and rear suspension, wheel hub assembly, chassis frame, airbox, powertrain, 600cc engine, steering arm, exhaust, intake, fuel tank, and braking system.
Work is continuing on the custom seat, aerodynamic package, radiator, pedal assembly, and firewall as the team works toward completing the vehicle.
Reflecting on their journey so far, Daivik Tulsee, a final-year Mechanical Engineering student and member of the project, said, “We keep moving forward.” The statement reflects the determination that has characterised the project as the students balance demanding academic schedules with the technical requirements of designing and building a Formula student race car.
Despite the challenges, enthusiasm within the team remains high. “Excitement trumps difficulty any day,” said Ryan Flemix, describing the mindset that continues to motivate the students throughout the project.
For Ryan Bennetts, the opportunity to see the project come to life is what motivates him most. “I can’t wait to drive this car,” he said. The project has also created an environment where students can enjoy the design process while developing industry-relevant skills. Ayrton Contreiras jokingly summed up his experience by saying, “I enjoy spinning my CAD.” The team is aiming to complete the vehicle by 31 August 2026 – a milestone that will mark the end of months of planning, designing, and manufacturing.
Although the race car remains the project’s centrepiece, its greatest achievement may be the experience students gain throughout the process. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, the Formula Student Project continues to prepare future engineers for careers beyond the classroom while reinforcing UP’s commitment to innovation and experiential learning.
