AmaTuks played to a 1-1 draw against bottom-of-the-table side Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Tshwane derby at Tuks Stadium on 10 November.

In the previous encounter between the teams, Sundowns beat Tuks to eliminate them from the Telkom Knockout Cup. Sundowns started off the strongest, keeping possession and pressing forward. Anthony Laffor scored in the 15th minute to give Sundowns an early lead. As was the case in the last game between the sides, Pembele provided the assist before Laffor scored. With the lead, Sundowns seemed to get complacent and paid the price on the half-hour mark. AmaTuks’ Junior Sibande was credited with his first goal of his season after his cross deflected off a few Sundowns’ defenders before ending up in the back of the net.

Aubrey Ngoma had a good chance to give the home side the lead just the before the break but his shot was saved by Wayne Sandilands.

Sundowns came out the better team at the break, troubling the AmaTuks defence. Siyabonga Shoyisa and Tebogo Monyai were brilliant in their defence game for AmaTuks. Teko Modise nearly restored Sundowns’ lead in the 68th minute, and.

Warren Bishop almoststole all three points for AmaTuks in the 83rd minute, but his header went over the crossbar. The game ended 1-1.

Steve Barker said, “I am disappointed that we couldn’t get the three points today. I thought once we scored the goal we were the only team in the game”. Barker also criticised the referee for not awarding what he called “clear penalties” in both halves.

AmaTuks face Free State Stars next, at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on 21 November at 19:30.
