Perdeby caught up with South African cricket sensation AB de Villiers to find out more about the man behind the wickets.
At school you excelled in a number of sports, how did cricket end up taking the centre stage?
I made the SA Colts team at the age of 16 and then decided to give it a go in cricket.
What would you describe as the proudest moment in your career thus far?
Being at the crease when we beat Australia in the first test match at the end of 2008 in Perth. We chased down a record breaking total in the final innings of the test match.
Apart from all the physical preparation, how do you prepare mentally before a big match?
I believe this is the most important part of being successful as a cricketer. I visualize my inning, go through my game plan and just don’t allow any negative thoughts to creep into my mind.
Let us rewind a few years. AB, as a ten year old boy what do you want to be when you grow up?
A doctor, like my dad.How would your friends describe you?
Not sure. Fun, friendly and positive. I’d also like to think that I’m a down to earth kind of a guy. I despise arrogance!
Tell us something about you only a few people know.
I’m from a small town about 100km north of Pretoria, Warmbaths. My parents still live there.
You’ve lived in Pretoria for a few years now. What do you love most about our capital city?
I just love the young, energetic vibe about our lovely Jacaranda City.
How do you unwind in your spare time?
I enjoy watching a movie, playing golf or having a braai with some friends. I also obviously love spending time with my family.
What is your biggest motivation/inspiration in life?
To be successful enough so I can make a difference in the lives of others, especially children. That’s my biggest dream of all and I’m working on it at the moment. I believe that’s what life is all about.
What advice would you give to young cricketers who want to follow in your footsteps?
Just to keep following their dreams, even if they don’t and won’t always come true. It’s important to see it as a learning curve, learn from those mistakes and then dream bigger next time around.
