On July 28, the UP Consulting Society held their first physical meeting in nearly three years, chaired by Mbalienhle Ngcobo. The meeting was held at the SRC Chambers, in partnership with Bain & Company, and the topic of the day was “Hypothesis-Based Consulting and Problem Solving”. The society strives to educate students about the potential at having management consulting as a career, where students across all fields of study can build a solid career with international reach. At times corporations go through unexpected difficulties, and cannot identify the problem – which is where management consultant come in to investigate the cause and subsequently provide recommendations.

At the society’s meeting, there was an exercise where students were able to witness an example of an interview that a potential intern or employee will go through as part of the recruitment process. The exercise was meant to give attendees an idea of what to expect, should they decide to apply for the opportunities available at Bain & Company. The exercise was designed to test one’s quick mental reasoning, finding the faults and ultimately coming up with the best possible solutions to the difficulties that the company is facing.

There are multiple opportunities at Bain & Company for students which include internship opportunities for second year students until post graduate level. However, this does not mean first-year students do not have any place at the company. First-years are encouraged to apply for “Ignite Your Passion”, an opportunity that will expose students to management consulting while enjoying a good meal. The closing date for applications is 16 September.

The other opportunities are available and can be applied for until 19 August: associate consultant, full-time consultant, the Bain Women Accelerate Masterclass, the CA(SA) Dinner, the Bain Accelerate Program, and the Actuarial Qualification Sponsorship Program.
