Safety on campus and in Hatfield remains a major issue for students. Unfortunately, it is no secret that we are vulnerable to crime. The Citizen reported that crime has been on the rise in Pretoria in terms of murder, sexual offences, assault, robbery, and various other offences. Additionally, Pretoria continually reaches top spots in global crime rankings. The Daily Sun reported that 6 of the country’s leading universities fell victim to robbery and theft, with 449 cases being recorded this year.
The University of Pretoria has implemented various security measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. As per the UP website, the university has 24-hour security and CCTV cameras, and emergency response services are always on standby. An important security service that is available is the Green Route, which involves a security guard escorting a student to their residence or vehicle. The service is available from 18:00 to 06:00, and you can approach any security guard to arrange for someone to walk with you. Alternatively, you can contact Security Services.
The university collaborates with the Hatfield Improvement District, an organisation that works to further security and safety in and around the area. Furthermore, they engage in urban management and social upliftment.
Here are some safety tips to keep you and your friends safe:
- Do not leave valuables out in public
- Be sure to communicate with friends or family if you are going out
- Try to walk in groups
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Be careful when accepting food or drinks from people you do not trust
- Familiarise yourself with emergency and evacuation procedures
- Consider investing in self-defence measures such as pepper spray as an added level of protection
- Do not walk with your earphones in if you can help it because this shows that you have an electronic device with you
- Do not engage in anything that makes you feel uncomfortable
- Be sure to report any suspicious activity to the security services
- Trust your gut
