The SA20 is a T20 cricket league that started in 2023 and over the past three years, has grown in strides. This is South Africa’s premier franchise-based T20 cricket, organised by Cricket South Africa (CSA). The competition takes place during the South African summer, normally kicking off in January. It features six franchises (teams), owned by six of the entities that own six of the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. These entities have all made substantial investments, with the goal of making this league the biggest domestic cricket competition outside of the IPL.
The competition sees each team face each other twice in the round-robin stage in a home and away game, before the playoffs, where the final four play and fight for the trophy. The games are played over four weeks, all over South Africa, where fans are given the opportunity to watch the games live from their own towns or cities.
Having such a competition on South African soil is both revolutionary and impactful for the growth of cricket in the country. The league keeps improving regulations for the advancement of cricket in South Africa. In seasons two and three (2024 and 2025) of the competition, each team was required to pick one rookie (an upcoming South African cricket player), and in the fourth edition, the SA20 required teams to have a minimum of two under-23 players in their 19-player squads.
This structure will not only bring new faces on the field, but will also pull a new range of fans (young adults) to the stands. This is a place where up-and-coming South African cricketers get the chance to play at the same level as some of the best cricket players in the world. The league features franchises from all over South Africa, namely Durban’s Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Over the past three years, the competition has seen immense growth in popularity and has even started attracting international attention. The distinct vibe and amazing atmosphere are due to the South African fanbase, who turn the games into a paradise for cricket diehards, party people and families.
The unmatched South African energy is further amplified by the DJs, pyrotechnics, and fan experiences. This is an awesome way to spend your summer days out, with family and friends. Fans who have been to some of the games describe it as a “must-have” experience.
All in all, the SA20 is an exciting revolution in the world of cricket, especially for South African cricket fans who now have the opportunity to watch world-class cricket T20 games live in the atmosphere only South Africans can bring. Furthermore, this highlights upcoming cricket talent in SA and grows the sport in leaps and bounds. Tickets to the games are fairly affordable, and this is a very family-friendly environment. So, if you have no plans this January, I strongly suggest you go watch one of the SA20 games closest to you. Even if you are not a cricket fan, go for the experience (and maybe you might come back as a die-hard fan).
