Living right next to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Hatfield means accepting that your neighbourhood can be the absolute heartbeat of South African rugby. Over the weekend of 11 July, the quiet lull of the winter recess was completely shattered when the Springboks brought their global showcase to Pretoria to face Scotland. For a few wild days, the quiet streets of our campus ecosystem were transformed into a massive, roaring sea of green and gold, proving exactly what happens when international rugby lands right on our doorstep.
Before kickoff, an Instagram poll on PDBY’s Instagram was conducted to see how the student community was gearing up for the invasion. The feedback painted a clear picture of what hosting a home test means to students. When asked what the best part of having a Springbok game on our doorstep is, 54% of respondents said that it was “the unmatched day-drinking energy on the streets”, while 25% loved seeing international rugby superstars in the neighbourhood. The remaining 21% highlighted the massive economic boost that local spots around Hatfield receive over the weekend.
Of course, navigating a massive international fixture also means surviving the inevitable price hikes. A whopping 55% of respondents said that they were staying home to avoid the increased prices they may come across. 21% admitted that they would be “eating noodles for the next two weeks” to afford the “gees”, while only 24% budgeted for a standard weekend. This directly influenced where fans said they would be watching the game. 48% of respondents opted for a braai with their friends, 24% were lucky enough to have tickets to be at Loftus Versfeld, 14% squeezed into a student bar, and the remaining 14% were tracking the score on X (Twitter) while studying.
Despite the budget constraints, pre-match confidence in the air was undeniable. A staggering 63% of students predicted an easy, comfortable win for the Springboks (winning by 15+ points), meanwhile 35% expected a tight, stressful battle that ultimately saw the home side win (by 1 to 7 points). A mere 2% thought that Scotland could pull off a massive upset and win the game.
As for what drew everyone’s attention on the field, 59% of respondents said that they were just there for “Rassie’s tactical masterclass”, easily beating out the 28% of people that were most excited to see powerhouse forwards dominating the tight five and the 13% looking out for local backline speedsters.
This overwhelming confidence is well-founded when looking at historical data. According to SA Rugby Stats, the Springboks boast a dominant record against Scotland, having played 29 matches, winning 24 of them and losing only 5. Overall, the Springboks have accumulated 774 points against Scotland’s 336.
South Africa’s biggest win over Scotland was a massive 58-point victory where they reached their highest score of 68 points. While Scotland has managed five victories over the years, their most notable came on 16 November 2002 when they defeated the Springboks 21-6 at Murrayfield.
This rich history only added to the weight of the weekend, proving once again that when the Springboks come to Loftus, Hatfield puts on a show that no other student town can match.
