The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachelle Caine

JESSICA SIMELANE

Morganville Vampires is a thrilling book series with an original take on vampirism and other creepy supernatural phenomena. It follows the life of a college student who frequently finds herself in life or death situations in a town that views humans as walking blood bags. When the main character, Claire, arrives in Morganville, a small town in Texas, for college, she is small, insecure and afraid. Claire deals with all of the normal pressures of finding oneself alone for the first time and in a new town.

Claire is mistreated during her first week of university so she flees the dormitories in search of a safer home. She finds herself in the ‘Glasshouse’, an off-campus commune with 3 new housemates. Just when she thinks she is safe, she is introduced to the truth about Morganville, that it is overrun with vampires. Throughout the series, she is forced to deal with death, fear and tackling things that are out of her comfort zone. Claire’s struggles are strangely relatable as a university student. She quickly becomes good friends with the members of the glasshouse, this friendship becomes her greatest asset in a town where being alone means being eaten. Other than the typical overarching themes of magic and mystery that find their way into supernatural stories, Morganville Vampires also tackles themes of abuse, bullying and heartbreak. This gives a certain realness to the story that makes understanding the characters and their trauma easier.

The writing style and dedication to character development will transport the reader into the world of the novel flawlessly. Your heart is left racing through every adventure, as you feel and fear for the characters you will undoubtedly fall in love with. Caine writes in the third person but still manages to give each character a powerful and distinct voice. Compared to her other work, Morganville Vampires is very easy to connect to. It is very well written and seems to become more and more relatable with time. The Morganville Vampires consists of 15 books and is sure to keep you entertained this spooky season.
