On 8 March the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, announced the third confirmed case of COVID-19 in South Africa.
The third case is confirmed to be the wife of the first case and comes after the second case of a Gauteng woman, who was also part of the group which visited Italy, was confirmed. The Department of Health, in a media statement, confirmed that they have “traced all ten of these individuals. Nine of them had returned to South Africa” and have been tested for COVID-19, and that their results will be released within the next 48 hours. The Hilton man confirmed as the first case, Dr Mkhize confirmed, is feeling “upbeat and jovial” and is awaiting approval to be discharged from his hospital. UP continues the process to suspend the biometric access system across all campuses.
