President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered an address to the nation on 23 March at 19:50 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Ramaphosa announced that in light of COVID-19, South Africa has been placed under a 21 day national lock down from midnight, 26 March to midnight, 16 April.

All South Africans are required to stay at home with the exception of health workers, emergency personnel, security services, and those part of the production and supply of food and basic goods, amongst other essential services. People will only be permitted to leave their houses under strictly controlled circumstances such as to seek medical care, to purchase food and medical supplies, and to collect social grants.
All shops and business will be closed with the exception of essential services such as health care providers and food suppliers.
A full list of permitted services is to be published by the government.
