El Clásico has a history of aggression. The two most eminent teams in Spain, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid FC faced each other in a battle of history and pride on 25 October 2026 at Spotify Camp Nou, home to Barcelona and enemy territory to Real Madrid.
El Clásico has always drawn attention for its constant battle on the pitch during the times of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, solidifying the rivalry as two of the most prominent players in football history battled against each other. This was an era of high-end stakes and competitive football with the aggressiveness of Sergio Ramos and Pepe to the skillful dribbling nature of Neymar Jr. That was a golden age of football.
Tension between both teams is always settled on the pitch. The skills of a player and the tactics of a team are used as a language of dominance throughout the game. The fans and the public engage in comment sections and create social media content surrounding the feud, which heightens the anticipation and opinions of people.
The friction between Barcelona and Real Madrid is fuelled by fandom culture, sparked by never ending debates circling the two teams on social media platforms and podcasts all the way to journalists and pundits. That’s just how deep the rivalry runs. There is constant engagement online of which team is going to win the match, who has the most star players, recent performances, and predictions of which tactics are going to be played.
However, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are viewed differently. Barcelona has had a beautiful start to the 2026/2027 season, having secured 9 wins. They lead the table asserting dominance and pride in their work and their fans stride on the success of their wins. With the likes of Ballon d’Or nominees Lamine Yamal and Rodri alongside Brazilian star Raphinha and left winger Anthony Gordon, fans believe that this is the dream team to win it.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, is facing difficulty in reassuring confidence in the game. Brazilian left winger Vinícius Júnior is constantly facing criticism from Real Madrid fans and the general public because of his lack of “assumed desire” to play. ESPN journalist Alex Kirkland states that, “Vinícius hasn’t been scoring goals, he hasn’t even looked like scoring goals.” And this places the question in many fans’ minds of whether Real Madrid has what it takes to beat the undefeated Barcelona.
Not only that, Real Madrid has been labelled a team with “too much salt,” with each player vying for the glory of scoring a goal. A sensational squad with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé alongside the experienced coaching of José Mourinho would place faith and confidence in the team, but there is a lack of chemistry and connection between the players that visibly translates on the pitch during matches.
Fans were left guessing as to whether the team can keep the intensity alive on the pitch or whether this would be an easy win for their rival. Tuks student Asibonge Mabaso quotes, “Their performance (Real Madrid) is lacking right now and obviously Barcelona has the rise.” BBC Sports Journalist Chris McKenna says that, “It hurts to lose any El Clásico, but to do so on the night when their fierce rivals secure back-to-back titles will only sharpen the focus on how far they are behind Barcelona.” And this is the harsh reality of Real Madrid when being compared to their competitors.
Ultimately, fans wonder if Real Madrid can change the narrative or whether Barcelona can maintain their dominant lead in the La Liga.
Amidst the turmoil and chaos that followed Real Madrid, the team was able to show resilience and determination throughout the game, defeating Barcelona 2-1 away.
French player Kylian Mbappé gave Real Madrid the lead in the first half of the game, setting the tone and energy in the stadium. However, Brazilian star Raphinha restored the hope of Barcelona fans after equalising in the 61st minute. The atmosphere was electric at Camp Nou, as there was a revival stirred up in the fans after a brilliant goal.
The match was filled with constant anticipation and expectation of who was going to get the break. Yet Kylian Mbappé led Real Madrid to a thrilling victory, securing a last minute goal in the 88th minute of the game after having been given an assist from Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham.
This match broke the head-to-head record that was set between Barcelona and Real Madrid with Madrid possessing 107 wins and Barcelona maintaining 106 wins.
