At the start of the year, we looked ahead at what the 2026 UP Koshuisrugby season might hold. The predictions were made, the traditional heavyweights were backed, and the whispers of day house underdogs starting a revolution were just that: whispers.
Ten weeks of brutal, unapologetic rugby later, and the regular season has officially drawn to a close. The logs are locked, the bruising pool stages are behind us, and the campus now knows exactly who the real contenders are. Looking back at the campaign, this season delivered an incredible mix of clinical dominance and unprecedented historic milestones.
The Gold Standard: Sonop 1’s Perfect Blueprint
If there is one story that defined the first-team division this year, it is the absolute machine that is Sonop 1. Up until the final whistle of week ten, they were on an untouchable, flawless run. They closed out the regular season at the top of the first team log with an imposing 31 points and a league-best of +107 point difference.
While OP Village 1 managed to snatch a late 16-13 upset in the final round, it does not overshadow the tactical masterclass Sonop 1 put on for the preceding two months. According to Captain Johan van den Heever, that high standard was no accident. “I think the biggest factor was consistency,” Van den Heever noted. “Every week, we focused on controlling the controllable. Our preparation, our attitude, and our work rate. We never allowed ourselves to become comfortable, regardless of who we were playing. Every player understood their role, and everyone bought into the same goal.”
What makes Sonop so dangerous is their institutional continuity. When asked about their incredible unbeaten streak that spanned almost the entire season, Van den Heever pointed straight to the res culture. “The reason for the unbeaten run is the system that we teach the players from first-year through to their final year. We play the same structure and system, so when a new player puts on that beautiful first team jersey, they already know how their teammates are going to play. The secret, I think, is the consistency in our structure.”
It is more than just tactics, though. “Wearing the Sonop jersey is something we do not take lightly. The team was not just talented players; the team is more like a family by the end of the season. That is what makes this team so special.”
The Revolution in the Trenches: The Tower and Dregeana
While Sonop were executing perfect systems at the top, a completely different kind of history was being written in the second-team division. Entering the year off the back of a disappointing 2025, the combined day house and residence squad of The Tower and Dregeana had everything to prove.
Not only did they secure their first-ever win as a combined team early on, but they completely flipped the script on the division’s traditional hierarchy, finishing a stellar second on the log with 27 points, 6 wins, and a crucial draw.
For Head Coach Leo Köster, that historic first victory was just the catalyst. “It meant a great deal to everyone involved, but more than anything, it was confirmation that the work we’ve been putting in every training session is paying off. That first win wasn’t the end goal; it was proof that we’re building something sustainable.”
The defining shift in their season arrived when they realised that they could dictate the pace against the league’s giants. Köster pinpointed a gruelling 10-5 victory over Sonop 2 in week three and a gritty 14-14 draw against OP Village 2 in week four as the moments that everything changed. They later backed that up by defeating OP Village 19-15 in a week seven thriller.
“I think the turning point came when the players stopped worrying about who was standing across from them and started focusing on the rugby we wanted to play,” Köster explained. “Backing that up with a draw and later on a win against OP reinforced that it wasn’t a once-off performance. Those games changed the belief within the squad.”
Now, sitting near the pinnacle of the standings, The Tower and Dregeana have their eyes firmly set on silverware. “Absolutely, we believe we can win the Shield,” Köster said. “If you don’t believe you can win, you’re in the wrong environment. Our focus isn’t on looking too far ahead – it’s on improving every week and earning the right to compete.”
Looking at the Broader Battlefield
Across the rest of the league, the season was equally explosive. Tuks Ekhaya’s under-20s ran an absolute clinic in the junior ranks, highlighted by massive blowouts like their 43-0 win over House TAU in week eight and a 40-0 blanking of Mopane to close out week ten. Tuks Ekhaya have laid down a terrifying marker for the future of the senior divisions.
