These works culminated in Gordimer being the recipient of both the Booker Prize in 1974 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991.
She was an active member of the anti-Apartheid movement, targeting the political regime through works such as July’s People. She was also a member of the then-banned ANC.
More recently Gordimer has been active in HIV/Aids campaigns that strive for free, government-funded treatment.
Gordimer is survived by her two children.
