EFFSC to challenge presidential elections at High Court: Is there a fourth presidential candidate?

SUSANNA ANBU, KAYLA THOMAS and LEAH REES On 25 October, PDBY received an anonymous tip that the Constitutional Tribunal (Student Court of UP) was in the process of drafting a binding order to reinstate an applicant’s name on the presidential ballot list for the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections. The Tribunal, in a 24 October hearing, declared that the Panel of appointed judges found that the applicant, Sipiwe Tato Ntiyantiya, “satisfies the eligibility requirements” to run in “the UP 2020 SRC Elections as a candidate for the Office of the SRC President”. TSHEPANG MOJI The University of Pretoria’s (UP) Faculty of Law has announced the appointment of Professor Charles Maimela as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning for the period 1 August 2020 to 30 April 2024. His appointment makes him the youngest and the first black Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law. Prof. Maimela’s main research interests lie in Medical Law, having written his doctoral dissertation on “Legal issues relating to the treatment of persons living with cancer”. UP libraries to gradually re-open

TSHEPANG MOJI On 19 June the University of Pretoria’s libraries, with the exception of the Witbank Health Library, will begin a phased reopening. The libraries will offer limited services to students and staff eligible to return to campuses under the level 3 of the lockdown regulations. Access to the library for eligible students will be limited to collections, and no browsing will be permitted. The libraries will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays between 09:00 & 15:00. Returning services include the book pick-up and book return services and in-house digitisation of library material. The Higher Health-National Department of Health (NDOH) is launching an Integrated Digital COVID-19 daily risk screening system for the Post-Schooling Education and Training Sector (PSET), to save lives while saving the academic year. HealthCheck is a tailor-made risk screening assessment and mapping tool. JAMEO CALVERT The Chairperson of the residence sub-council, Lara Thom, was happy to share with PDBY that the fund has turned out to be successful. According to her, they are ahead of their schedule, and have since been able to make the first round of payments on 27 April. JAMEO CALVERT On 31 March, Flywire rolled out their platform to aid UP international students make fee payments. According to Munya Chiura, Flywire South Africa Country Manager, the payment option is immediately available for use by the University of Pretoria’s international students. NOKWANDA KUBHEKA Isiduduzo’ is the UP School of the Arts’s response to a call made by the Humanities Faculty for sources of inspiration, as the UP community and the world face uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
