Review: The Art of the Idea and How It Can Change Your Life (2009) John Hunt

TALITA CALITZ

Award-winning author and creative director, John Hunt, injects fresh thinking into his latest book, The Art of the Idea. It is an insightful guide to how anyone, from the man on the street to a large company, can come up with revolutionary ideas. It might sound farfetched at first, but throughout the book Hunt succeeds in convincing the reader otherwise.

The essence of this book is an attempt to get the reader out of an old frame of mind and into a fresh way of thinking. The publication is visually pleasing as it includes 20 colourful artworks by the acclaimed South African artist Sam Nhlengetwha. Furthermore, the uncluttered layout of the book contributes to Hunt’s idea of all things new and fresh. Hunt also writes about the dawn of a golden age where people should embrace diversity, because “it will hug you back”.

What makes this book different? It is a refreshing, easy-to-read book and every page is filled with insight. Whether the book is able to change your life or not is up to you. Luckily, the book does give a step-by-step approach to finding the portal to your very own creative mind.

Particularly, anyone wanting to escape the bustling noise of daily routine should keep this one handy. As Hunt himself says: “We don’t know what we don’t know until we do what we don’t usually do.”
